The Aeree Loft in Chicago

Last week, Melia and I went to the Aeree Loft for a bridal event. It was a great event that showcased an awesome raw space that has so much potential for a wedding or literally any event.

I fell in love with the place and I wanted to share with you all.

I also took a couple photos at the event

The Value of the Signature Cocktail

I pride myself on having a keen eye for value. Value meaning specifically what expenses are 'worth it' to the bride and groom. While that list is different for every couple, a recent article in Refinery 29 highlighting some of the best signature cocktails in NYC caused me to think about the positive reasons to have a signature cocktail at your reception, and why it's value is pretty ubiquitous.

It says you in a much more interesting (and less in your face) way than your pictures screen printed on to your cake. While the good stuff goes beyond the cool factor, the cool factor definitely has appeal. You can be as trendy or as traditional as you want, and you don't need a mixologist to do it. The important thing is that your signature cocktail makes your guests think of you. If you only want beer and wine at your wedding, or a mixed drink just isn't you, there are options for that as well. A friend of mine surprised her husband (who brews his own beer - delicious!) with custom made labels for the bottles of homemade brew they provided their guests with. A client of mine picked out two different wines, one with her name on the label and one with her husbands. You can choose a beer or a wine from a region that represents you as well! The important thing is that you get to do you - and nothing beats that cool factor.

You can create lasting memories. You can turn your signature cocktail into an interesting gift for your bridal party. You can gift a bottle of that specific wine, or you can make small print outs of the recipe for the cocktail and gift it with a bottle of the main ingredient. Beyond that, this signature drink is yours and yours alone. You can celebrate with it on anniversaries, or it can just be a fond memory that you recall whenever you join your girls out for drinks. Either way, it's a nice way to add a little more touch of special to your big day.

It can be a way to control costs, although; as a caveat, some venues will tack on a hefty increase in price depending on the base ingredients. I've created cocktails with everything from Veuve Cliquot and Grand Marnier as a base to Smirnoff Blueberry, and each time the result is the same - guests couldn't get enough of the signature cocktail. It can be a great way to control an on consumption bar tab, a nice compromise between only beer and wine or the whole nine yards, and if you are designing your own reception, it's an incredible way to control how much product you order and avoid having a ton of leftovers.

You can find recipes and ideas for signature cocktails on websites like The Knot and Delish, or you can come up with your own. For those of you out there who have tastes like me (whiskey, neat or on the rocks), I would caution you to maybe cut the 'you' a tiny bit - not everyone can handle such a strong dose of awesomeness, which bring me to my final point. Signature cocktails are a great way to steer the Great Uncle Joe's away from his traditional vodka soda, hold the soda, and towards a libation will be more conducive to his making it through the reception without any extra special toasts. Over consumption is a valid concern that has been brought up to me by many a bride and groom. Signature cocktails are as a rule a little weaker than your boring old mixed drinks, because the addition of lower proof liquors or sparkling wine take the place of usually one third of the higher proof base of vodka, rum or whiskey.

So, to sum it all up, signature cocktails are an elegant and simple way to personalize your reception while adding some fun and giving you the option to control both your price point and, to a lesser extent, your guests consumption. Sounds like a win win to me!

What wedding trends are we going to see Summer 2011

Before we know it, summer wedding season will be upon us. This has us asking the question, what wedding trends will we see this year? Some of our predictions below.

1.) Social media - Social media will continue to play a huge role in wedding planning. You will see excitement from couples on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter and they might even use social media to find vendors like photographers, caterers, or even a day of wedding coordinator like Ciao Bella Events. Brides and grooms to be will want to keep their family and friends about how their wedding planning process is going and make them feel like they are part of the planning.

2.) DIY- We think the DIY trend is here to stay. Not only is it a cost saver but it brings a personal touch to the wedding and is a true way a bride and groom can show their personality. Expect to see it DIY elements in the weddings you attend this year.

3) Eco-Friendly and Green weddings- What's more chic then being green? More brides and grooms are paying attention to the greener elements in wedding planning all the way from using recycled paper on invitations to making sure is locally fresh. Also, we'll be seeing more couples tying their weddings to charity and in many cases asking for a donation for their favorite charity then a gift.

4) Making it modern- You will find a bride choosing non traditional dresses in 2011. You'll see wedding dresses in different colors and styles, and this trend will ring through even on decor with couples opting for different table designs then the round table options. You'll see different dessert options, for example mini cupcake towers instead of a traditional wedding cake and even letting bridesmaids choose variety of dress styles in the same color choice.

5) Embracing Culture- Brides and grooms are embracing their culture and ethnicities. You'll see this reflected in the menu at the reception and the decor. This will add a special element for brides and grooms to be able to showcase their unique traditions and reflect their personalities.

Store Review: Bella Bridesmaid in Gold Coast Chicago

Meadow Sweet dress from Simple Silhouettes, part of the Classics collection

Yesterday, I went to a Bella Bridesmaid on bridesmaids duties with my sister Meredith who is getting married in September and her bridesmaids. Interesting enough, Bella Bridesmaid is also where my boyfriends cousin Maureen works and she helped the group out with selecting dresses from Bella Bridemaids collection of designers to try on.

Both Sheridan (my little sister) myself and Meredith's good friend Tori modeled dresses for the group from LulaKate, Simple Silhouettes and TwoBirds. We tried on a variety of dresses strapless, one-shoulder, and even a TwoBirds dress that you can wear 15 different ways, but the group ultimately decided on an A-line strapless dress. Meredith has chosen pomegranate as the color for the dress and we will all wear light silver sashes in a color called Fog.

Bella Bridesmaid offers a variety of chic options for bridesmaids that are stylish, wearable and modern. We had great service the whole time with Maureen being very knowledgeable about the collections, giving great dress recommendations and giving thought into if what the bridesmaids were wearing would ultimately blend with the whole look and feel of the wedding.

I would highly recommend a visit to Bella Bridesmaid for your bridesmaid party. You can visit the Chicago location at 8 E. Chestnut Suite 3 Chicago, IL 60611. Bella Bridesmaid is by appointment only so call them at 312.943.0344 to schedule an appointment.

Destination Weddings - Helpful Tips

I recently overheard an interesting conversation between two co workers involving destination weddings. One had recently attended one, and the other had one coming up soon. The general sense I got was that both were a little confused and a little frustrated because they had not been given a clear understanding of what was expected. Having recently attended a destination wedding myself at Eagle Rock Lodge, I thought I would throw out a few helpful tips for the wedding couple and guests alike.

After some google searching, I think the most helpful website I found regarding destination weddings is destinationweddings.com. Not only is their website easy to navigate but they also offer vendor discounts for couples planning their destination wedding.

The general rules for destination weddings are pretty much the same as any other as far as couples, parents, and guests responsibilities go. The couple is expected to pay for the ceremony, reception, and any mandatory events such as a rehearsal dinner. Guests are expected to pay for their airfare, lodging and any additional recreational activities. It's up to the couple and their family as to who pays for the ceremony and the reception - traditional guidelines provide a nice structure but in todays modern world the couple may or may not be footing the majority of their expenses.

Some helpful things to keep in mind for destination weddings to avoid hurt feelings and missteps are:

Plan ahead - way, way ahead. A destination wedding is going to be pricey for the couple and guests alike (guests can expect to spend approximately $1,000 when all is said and done) so give people plenty of time to book flights, hotel rooms, etc. This goes double for your bridal party to ensure the people most important to you don't have any conflicts that prevent them from travelling.

Let your guests know if they should bring gifts or ship them. It's perfectly acceptable to have guests send gifts to the couples house or the house of one or both parents.

Limit your invitation list. If you know that someone won't be able to make it, or if you are limited to a smaller wedding party and still want to let acquaintances or distant relatives know about your big day, utilize a wedding announcement instead of sending an invitation.

Use a wedding website like The Knot, which has a free, easy to use wedding website planner that several clients as well as family members of mine have used. It will give you a central location to compile key information for your guests.

Be prepared to be flexible - many things happen only a day or two ahead of time when you plan a destination wedding including meeting your officiant, seeing the actual space and picking out your music. At my cousins (outdoor) wedding, it poured all day and night - but with the proper tent set up none of us minded.

Know what is included. The wedding I attended at Eagle Rock Lodge, a small and picturesque bed and breakfast, was one of the most beautiful weddings I have been privileged to be a part of. If you go this route, most likely there will be an on site coordinator to help you put together an a al carte package. Because of the size of the venue, guests will not be required to stay on location. A resort like Sandals will have an all inclusive package for the bride and groom as well as guests.

With a destination wedding, you are getting a picturesque location with an amazing atmosphere. Weddings are experiences that bring the couple and guests together for a beautiful experience that creates a lifetime of memories and bonds, and a destination wedding intensifies this. They may be a little more work but in my opinion they are totally worth it.

Costco now sells wedding gowns for less

We were pretty much blown away by the news that Costco will now be selling wedding dresses. When we think of Costco, it's usually the place we go to stock up on 24 rolls of TP or a 400 tablet bottle of Advil, but wedding dresses? Well, it is true ladies.

Wedding dress designer Kirstie Kelly designed six dresses for Costco which will be sold 40% off the retail price. Dresses range from $699 to $1399 and come in fabrics made of organza, satin and taffeta and will be offered in sizes 2 to 24.

Right now, the Kirstie Kelly dresses are apart of a traveling trunk show but you will be able to buy them in the store in the future. This has us asking ourselves... would you buy your wedding dress at Costco?
